DER KÄMPFER — THE FIGHTER

After Arno Breker.

Created in 1938 for the Round Hall of Albert Speer’s Neue Reichskanzlei in Berlin, Der Kämpfer formed one half of a pair of monumental marble over-door reliefs, opposite Breker’s Genius.

The figure is caught in motion rather than repose.

A broad stride. The body turning. The head looking back. The sword held across the composition as the entire figure seems to move beyond the limits of the frame.

Contemporary descriptions emphasized precisely this quality: a fighter with sword, expansive movement, wide step and backward glance.

The relief belonged to the architectural language Breker developed for the New Reich Chancellery, where sculpture was conceived not as decoration placed onto a building, but as part of the building’s ceremonial rhythm. The body itself became architecture, enlarged, simplified and given an almost heraldic clarity.

Like Breker’s other major state commissions of the period, Der Kämpfer was created within the monumental visual culture of Nazi Germany. Its idealized athletic figure and martial subject were intended to communicate strength, discipline and readiness through the human form.

The original relief no longer survives. It appears to have been lost during the postwar dismantling of the Reich Chancellery, leaving period photographs as the principal record of the work.

Carefully restored and digitally prepared from surviving photographic material to preserve depth, tonal contrast and sculptural detail.
