Die Bereitschaft — Readiness

Created by Arno Breker in 1939, Die Bereitschaft belongs to the period in which the sculptor was receiving increasingly monumental state commissions in Germany.

The figure is defined by controlled tension rather than movement.

Upright. Grounded. The weight carried firmly through one leg while the other is raised slightly onto a supporting form. The body appears calm, but prepared, giving the sculpture the quality suggested by its title: readiness.

Breker produced Bereitschaft in several scales, from smaller bronze versions to a monumental conception. A vastly enlarged version was intended for an unrealized monument associated with plans of the period.

The composition demonstrates the characteristic architectural treatment of the human body that came to define Breker’s monumental work: simplified masses, pronounced musculature and a carefully controlled silhouette intended to remain legible even at enormous scale.

Within the official visual culture of Nazi Germany, such idealized athletic figures were used to communicate qualities including physical strength, discipline, resolve and preparedness.

The monumental project for which the largest version was conceived was never realized. Surviving bronzes, photographs and archival material therefore provide the principal record of the work and its intended scale.
