KAMERADEN — COMRADES

After Arno Breker.

Two figures, but a single burden.

Kameraden, Comrades, was created in 1940 as part of Arno Breker’s monumental relief program for the projected transformation of Berlin. Unlike the solitary warriors that dominate much of the cycle, this composition is built around the relationship between two men.

One bears the weight of the other.

The subject is comradeship expressed not through ceremony, but through physical action: support, sacrifice and the refusal to abandon the man beside you.

The composition draws upon an ancient artistic language of the wounded warrior and the companion who carries him from danger. Breker transforms that theme into a monumental emblem, reducing the scene to bodies, weight and gesture.

There is no victory pose here.

Strength is measured instead by what one man is willing to carry for another.

Kameraden was exhibited at the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung in Munich in 1940 and formed part of the vast sculptural program intended for the planned north–south axis of “Germania.”

Its historical context is inseparable from the work. Breker was one of the principal state sculptors of Nazi Germany, and Kameraden presented an idealized image of military comradeship and willingness to sacrifice within the regime’s official visual culture.

The monumental stone version survived the war’s dispersal.

Long considered lost, Kameraden resurfaced in 2015 together with Breker’s Der Wächter and Der Rächer in a warehouse in Bad Dürkheim, Germany. The works were seized during an investigation into the ownership and attempted sale of a cache of monumental Nazi-era sculpture.

Today, the original relief is not ordinarily on public display.

What remains accessible to most viewers is the photographic record:

one man falling,

another refusing to let him fall alone.

Carefully restored and digitally prepared from surviving photographic material to preserve depth, tonal structure and sculptural detail.
