Der Wächter - The Guardian

Der Wächter was a massive sculptural work conceived within the tradition of monumental classicism, emphasizing vigilance, discipline and eternal preparedness in defence of the Fatherland.

Like many of Arno Breker's works, the sculpture's fate became uncertain during the later stage of the war, as bombings, evacuations, and post-war dismantling scattered numerous artworks across Europe. Reportedly taken by Soviet troops, it resurfaced decades later in private possession.  The monumental bas-relief was originally intended for the planned "Soldatenhalle"–The Soldier's Hall–in the capital project of "Germania".

Long believed lost, an investigations led to the discovery of three massive granite reliefs by Breker–identified as "Der Rächer", "Der Wächter" and "Kameraden"–were discovered in 2015 outside a warehouse in Bad Dürkheim, Germany, leading to seizure by the authorities. Each relief weighs around 40 tons and consists of 49 individual pieces.

Today, the original Der Wächter relief is not on public dispay. While some of Breker's sculptures survive and are housed in private collections or museums–such as the Arno Breker Museum in Nörvenich, Germany– Der Wächter has not been definitively located or restored to public view.
